Deciding which legal entity to pick for your business can be confusing. Once you’ve made your decision, how do you know it’s the right one? In this week’s two-minute tip, Tisha breaks it down for you so you can move forward in your business.

Welcome to another edition of Tisha’s Two-Minute Tips! I’m Tisha Dodge—president, founder of a law firm, and a social entrepreneur. When we work together, we make the world a better place.
Lately, I’ve been getting one question a lot: “How do I know if I picked the right legal entity for my business?”

My Personal Philosophy

As a lawyer and business owner, I believe there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The truth is, if you’re in start-up mode, most types of entities will likely work just fine. You may not realize you need a different legal structure until you’re already doing business and start seeing where a shift might benefit you.

I wish I could offer a simple sentence like “Just do this,” but that’s not how it works in real life.

Here’s something I believe strongly—even if it talks me out of doing business with you: If the legal structure you’ve chosen—whether it’s an LLC, corporation, or limited partnership—is working for you, then you may not need to change it. Don’t invest your time, money, and effort into switching unless there’s a compelling reason.

The Real Question

When someone asks if they’ve picked the right entity, what they’re really asking is:

  • Is my current legal structure working for me?
  • Would making a change bring clear advantages?

For example, some legal structures open up more funding opportunities. That’s a valid reason to explore a change.

In Conclusion

Creating a business with both profit and purpose means considering all your potential funding options. Once we know the sources you want to access, we work backwards to choose the best legal entity that supports those goals.
